HeyGen Review: I Made AI Avatar Videos Without Showing My Face

I'm not someone who loves being on camera. The idea of creating polished video content without actually recording myself has obvious appeal, which is what led me to spend a week seriously testing HeyGen.

What HeyGen Actually Does

HeyGen lets you create a video with a photorealistic AI avatar delivering a script you provide. You can choose from their library of pre-built avatars, or — on paid plans — create an avatar from your own video recording. The avatar speaks your script with natural lip sync, and the overall effect is far more convincing than you'd expect if you haven't seen this technology recently.

The Avatar Quality in 2026

The uncanny valley is still present, but it's getting narrower fast. In standard definition and for short clips, the avatars are genuinely convincing. At 1080p on a large screen, you start to notice subtle timing issues in micro-expressions. For corporate training, product demos, and YouTube content at normal viewing sizes? It holds up.

The Workflow

The basic workflow is: choose avatar → paste script → generate. Simple. The editor lets you adjust pacing, add slides or screen recordings as background, and adjust the avatar's position on screen. For basic content it takes under 10 minutes from script to exported video.

What It's Not Good For

Anything that requires emotional authenticity — think personal vlogs, community-building content, or anything where the audience needs to feel they're hearing from a real person — will not land with an AI avatar. The audience can tell, and for content where that relationship matters, it works against you.

Pricing Reality

The free tier is limited to short videos with watermarks. For regular use you need at least the Creator plan. It's not cheap — but if video production time is a genuine bottleneck for your team, the cost trades favorably against hiring a videographer or spending hours on camera yourself.
